Work in rows or in small colour blocks — whatever feels natural. Many beginners like to finish one colour area completely before moving to the next.
Your first project, step by step
- Start in the centre. Working outward from the middle of the design helps keep everything aligned.
- Anchor your yarn. Leave a short tail at the back and stitch over it with your first few stitches to hold it in place — no knots needed.
- Stitch one colour at a time. It's satisfying to watch each area fill in, and it keeps your yarn tidy.
- Keep an even tension. Not too tight, not too loose. The yarn should sit flat against the canvas without puckering it.
- Finish the back neatly. Run your yarn tail under a few existing stitches on the reverse and trim. Avoid long strands trailing across the back.

- Use shorter lengths of yarn. Around 45 cm (18 inches) is ideal. Longer strands tangle and wear thin as they pass through the canvas.
- Stitch in good light. Natural daylight or a daylight lamp keeps the colours true and your eyes fresh.
- Take breaks. Needlepoint is meant to be relaxing. A finished pillow is a marathon, not a sprint — and that's part of the charm.
- Don't chase perfection. A stitch going slightly the wrong way won't be visible once the piece is complete. Progress over perfection.
Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Pulling too tight. This distorts the canvas and makes it hard to block flat later.
- Mixing stitch directions. Keep every diagonal facing the same way for a clean, professional finish.
- Using knots. Knots create lumps and can work loose over time. Anchoring under stitches is more secure and lies flat.
